SMP.5: Use appropriate tools strategically.

 

The student strategically uses tally marks as a tool to find the sum of the repeated addition equations. Because this is the first time in this task the student used a tool to represent each addend, it is possible that the student knows how to skip count by 2s, 4s, and 5s and was able to apply this strategy to solve the previous problems.

1. CCSS Alignment

The student draws an accurate tape diagram that represents 2c and 2d. The student is also able to correctly find the total and uses the structure of the tape diagram to relate the sum to the repeated addends. However, the student does not write a repeated addition equation, which is necessary to show full proficiency of 2.OA.C.4.

2.OA.C.4: Use addition to find the total number of objects arranged in rectangular arrays with up to 5 rows and up to 5 columns, write an equation to express the total as a sum of equal addends.
