In collecting samples from first-year mathematics courses across the nation, the American Diploma Project (ADP) found — perhaps not surprisingly — that the level of mathematics demanded is notably consistent. As these sample problems from institutions in Indiana, Kentucky, New Mexico and Texas demonstrate, first-year courses in algebra and calculus demand that students understand different number systems and geometric properties, as well as model mathematics problems, and solve algebraic equations.
